Gretel’s puppies are home with their forever families

October 8, 2019 – Gretel’s puppies have left us and we felt they were so ready for the world! We are proud of how far they had come in their conditioning and we know they are each going to a great home with loving families that will complete the work to raise them into outstanding dogs for life! We are so thankful for the families that chose us and we know we carefully selected the best! Because of their support and adoption, we were able to give $300.00 to Amazima Ministries for each of the five pups that were adopted (we held back one pup for our program and she now lives with a forever guardian family) and one family generously donated an extra $100.00 to the children of Uganda.  Amazima is thankful for the $1,600.00 received this week to help feed and house so many kids in need. The pups are settling into their new homes and here they are on the day they left. Thank you to all the families and we wish you great success and a life of joy with your new family member!

October 1, 2019 – Puppy selections are finalized and we’re winding down with final preparations for pups coming home to their forever families.   Just want to mention a couple of things that might be helpful. …

For those of you that plan to do a lot of traveling with your pup in the car, we found this car booster seat and one like this seems to be a good choice:  Chewy.com

Also, snapped a picture of some of our favorite products that we love to have here.  A steel comb, natural flea treatments, important supplements loaded with anti-oxidants (Nuvet is something we start the pups on as soon as they can chew. If the link asks for a code, it is 91887.) Aside from Nuvet, we buy our supplies from Nature’s Pet, Chewy.com, Amazon, and we get our Charlie Bear treats at Trader Jo’s.

September 30, 2019 – The pups were scored for temperament testing this morning and as we expected, all scored as well-socialized, confident pups that are adaptable and extremely comfortable  with humans and other animals.

Once again, we see the pups scoring almost identical overall, especially where it matters most, with submission, intelligence and social skills.

On their restraint and submissiveness testing, every puppy scored a “3,” indicating the puppy is “outgoing and friendly and will adjust well to different types of environments and has a flexible temperament.”  On social skills and dominance, all pups scored between a 3 and 5 across the board, indicating pups are all “easily controlled, adaptable, easy to train and will thrive with regular companionship and encouragement. None of the pups scored high in the social category as dominant or harder to handle.

A couple other side notes:  Geneva is already fetching and retrieving. 🙂  All of the pups are well-socialized and self-assured, however, Geneva, Greta and Grant scored the highest in confidence at this stage. (Remember, they are still all developing and changing.) Grace appears the most laid back in the bunch, however, based on her scoring, it just may be that she’s slightly less self-assured and adventurous as her siblings. So hard to tell at this young age! Gabriel, though very social and so loving with his humans, is a little more cautious like Grace.  Gabriel and Grace would rather sit back and observe a bit before running into new surroundings and experiences. They need a moment to assess the situation. Confidence and trust in humans is going to continue to develop with their new families, as they continue to experience everything in a positive way, and as they are protected from the trauma of being handled incorrectly, especially as they go in and out of the normal puppy-hood fear stages.  The key to success going forward is this:  crate train, socialize them a LOT, and continue encouraging/teaching with positive reinforcement.  Follow these three things and you will have an incredible dog for years to come.

September 29, 2019 – It’s been a fun week at our house with the puppies! We had an open house for families to visit, along with leash training on the patio and lots of playtime and baths. Mama Gretel went home as we could see she was totally ready. Mamas start to get bored with their pups, a natural process and she wasn’t real interested in hanging out with them anymore. She’d nurse once and a while, but their teeth made it difficult for sure! So Gretel’s guardian family came to get her and we watched a very happy reunion!

Gretel before she left to go home to her guardian family.

The puppies have progressed to right where we want them to be.  We’ve come a long way on crate training, and mostly, they are quiet in a crate alone twice a day for about an hour. The days of crying still happen, but mostly they are learning to settle themselves down and be okay by themselves. They’ll still have an adjustment time after leaving us, our smells, and their litter, but this process of crate training here should make the process at home much easier and short-lived.

Tomorrow they will go through the official temperament testing we do to make sure that we haven’t missed anything and that they are all confident, smart and submissive. We have no doubt that they will all score with great temperaments, and all probably fairly equal. We already see great temperaments in each of them, but the scoring and the specific steps to test each of them in specific areas makes it official.. We’ll post more on that tomorrow and we’ll have official weights on them from the vet on Tuesday and will provide each of their weights when we call for puppy selections on Tuesday afternoon. They are all similar in size and we suspect that they will each be around 30 lbs. full grown.

Here are the pictures we took of them today. They are all so cute!

September 24, 2019 – Gretel’s puppies are six weeks old now. They are playful, fun and they love us humans! They watch us and wait patiently for us to pick them up or give them attention. They are “manding” pretty well now – a technique that requires them to sit (without us saying) for any attention. They are affectionate and snuggly and are adjusting well to each new challenge we give them.  They are now having crate time alone twice daily for 30-60 minutes to help them learn to be away from the pack.  We took a few pictures of them in their pen so you can see how big they are getting!

September 16, 2019 – Gretel’s puppies are eating kibble now and becoming a little more independent of mama Gretel.  They are coming out of their pen a couple of times a day now for play time and to explore a bit. It builds their confidence. They are now litter box trained. Super smart for sure, they figured out the litter box within a couple hours after being introduced to it. Ahhhh, this makes life easier for us humans and they stay really clean.

They are quite used to all kinds of sounds at this point and they don’t startle easily at all anymore. This is all part of creating non-reactive pups that grow up to be dogs without anxiety and pretty chilled out about everything! They do cry when they want mama, but a bowl of mushy kibble quiets them right down. They do love to eat! Ha, ha. And we love that because we don’t want skinny pups!  Here they are at five weeks old, posing nicely for all of you for their picture.  The next individual pictures will be posted again at seven weeks old, along with official weights from the vet. Wow, time if flying by!  We’ll post a little update next week along with a group photo. And we’ll get some more videos posted on Instagram as well.  We are really enjoying these pups! Adorable in every way.

September 9, 2019 – Gretel and Gunner’s pups are four weeks old today. They’re doing really well! They are becoming more active and we are bringing them out of the pen for play time now and they are starting to engage with each other (and us) more. They now have noticed all the toys we put in their pen and are starting to play. Still sleeping a great deal – but that will change over the next week or so.  They are getting used to baths, lots of loud, weird sounds and are being socialized with our team of family and friends that help us raise these pups daily. Here they are at four weeks old!

September 2, 2019 – Happy September!  Gretel’s puppies are three weeks old today and we noticed they started hearing! They respond to sounds and their desensitization to all kinds of sounds has begun! They’re listening to blow dryers, car horns, thunderstorms, fireworks, kids screaming (on recording, of course!), trains, sirens and more.

They are now finished with the Bio-sensor program, but still are being held and massaged at least twice a day for continual socialization and conditioning. They’ve had lots of baths at this point and enjoy being held. Still, they are super attached to mama (and her to them!) but humans are often nearby to continue to condition them to holding and being really comfortable with people. It won’t be long before their attention shifts from mama to their human caregivers. They still sleep a LOT and this is because they are so well fed and cared for by their mama, Gretel. They hardly need to move! She stays right near their pen at all times and watches all of us closely as we handle her pups. She’s wonderful to them and exactly what we always hope for. (Experts say thirty percent of temperament comes from the mama, so this is important.) She is always calm and gentle around them.

The pups have continued to gain weight and are all weighing in between two and three pounds at this point. All pretty close in weight, really. Their coloring is almost identical too, as you can see.  Gabriel is the only one that has slightly different coloring. He’s just a little lighter at this point, and he has prominent white markings on his chest, chin and head that tell him apart. They are all healthy and doing very well. Soon they’ll become more active, but for now they continue to sleep.

August 26, 2019 – I love when the puppies turn two weeks old. It just seems less scary, less monitoring them continuously, and more peace of mind. Especially when they are nice and plump like these puppies are! And today, as a little gift to all of us, the pups decided to open their eye! Just in time for their photo shoot. Eyes opened, and hearing will come next.  We’re finishing with the Bio-sensor program, the pups are snuggled and massaged daily, and we’ve started regular baths for them. They love when we hold their bodies under the warm running water. We will try to get video of this. Early conditioning with running water equals no fear of water. Not a lot of activity with them yet, still sleeping nearly all day long. But we pulled them away from mama for some pictures. Here they are!

August 20, 2019 – Gretel’s puppies are one week old! They are all thriving after being closely monitored and weighed regularly for the entire week.  The first week is always critical to make sure they stay warm, they are eating well and mama is doing her job. All has gone perfectly. We started the Bio-sensor program with them at four days old and we’ll do that through next week. Mama Gretel is super attentive and loving to her pups. This is normal, good mama behavior.  We always expect that, yet we’ve told by other breeders their are mamas that just aren’t cut out to be mamas! Yeich. Never experienced that yet, thankfully.  Even weighing them, we had to do it right next to her so she could see and monitor us. She’s gaining trust in all of us and we were able to pull them away for individual photos so you can see what they really look like!  Eyes still closed, that usually happens at around two weeks.  Here they are!  The G Litter!

August 13, 2019 – Gretel surprised us and brought us six healthy, beautiful red pups two days early! They arrived with great birth weights, so apparently, they were done in there. They are nursing well at one day old, and Gretel did a good job with no problems. She’s taking great care of her pack. As a new mama, she jumped right in with cautiously watching over them and making sure they are all okay at every moment. It’s tough getting her to leave them even to do her business outside!  All of the puppies seem to be thriving. We’ll weigh them regularly, as we always do that first week, and are watching closely. We see all of them are doing well! Gretel’s ultrasound seemed to indicate a couple more pups, but sometimes the vet is off in his count due to shadows or something.  The litter is fully reserved now and thankfully, we didn’t have to turn anyone away that had been waiting.   Gretel and Gunner gave us  three red girls and three red boys. Some have a few limited white markings. We think this is going to be a beautiful litter – well, look at the parents! Here they are…….

Here’s Gretel in labor. (This seems wrong!) Ha, ha. She’s did great. No problems.
Six nursing pups!

Gretel and pups, only a few hours old here. Moved into a regular pen with a guardrail to keep mama from accidentally laying back on a pup.
